I-864 Affidavit of Support

Preparation Worksheet โ€” Petitioner and Joint Sponsor
londonvisatracker.github.io
v1.4 ยท Apr 2026
โš ๏ธ The I-864 MUST be wet signed. Print the completed form, sign by hand, scan it back in. Do NOT use a digital or e-signature โ€” this is a common reason for delays. The I-864EZ is available for simple cases but many users encounter issues with it; the standard I-864 is recommended for all.
Part 1 โ€” Should you use I-864EZ or I-864 standard?
Recommendation: use the standard I-864 regardless of how simple your case appears. Many users experience problems with the EZ form even in straightforward situations.

You may only use the I-864EZ if ALL three of the following apply:

If any answer is No, you must use the standard I-864.

Part 2 โ€” About you (the sponsor)
Part 3 โ€” About the immigrant you are sponsoring
Part 4 โ€” Household size
Count each person only once. Household size determines the income threshold you must meet.
Yourself and the person you are sponsoring
Your spouse (if not already counted above)
Dependent children under 21
Other dependents listed on your most recent tax return
Immigrants you have previously sponsored still under obligation
Total household size

Check the NVC Poverty Guidelines Calculator to confirm the income threshold for your household size.

Part 5 โ€” Employment and income
Documents to attach: IRS tax transcript (most recent year minimum โ€” get from IRS website, not a copy of your return). Adding W-2s, 6 months of pay stubs, and up to 3 years of transcripts is advised even if not explicitly required by NVC.
Part 6 โ€” Assets (only if income is below threshold)
London-specific warning: The US Embassy London has demonstrated reluctance to accept assets-only cases. Cases relying primarily on savings, property equity, or investments have received 221(g) even when technically meeting thresholds. If income is close to or below the requirement โ€” secure a joint sponsor. Do not rely on assets alone.
Part 7 โ€” Sponsor's obligations (read before signing)

By signing the I-864, you agree to financially support the immigrant at 125% of the US poverty line (or 100% if on active duty sponsoring a spouse or child). This obligation is legally enforceable and lasts until the immigrant:

  • Becomes a US citizen, OR
  • Has worked 40 qualifying Social Security quarters (~10 years), OR
  • Loses permanent resident status and departs the US, OR
  • Dies.
Divorce does NOT end the I-864 obligation. The sponsor remains financially responsible regardless of the status of the relationship.
Joint Sponsor โ€” if petitioner income is insufficient
Adding a joint sponsor causes a 2โ€“3 day CEAC lockout while the system updates. Plan ahead and do not add a joint sponsor at the last minute.

The joint sponsor must be a US citizen or green card holder and must meet the income threshold independently based on their own household size. They complete a separate I-864 form.

  • Separate I-864 (wet signed)
  • IRS Tax Transcript (most recent year)
  • W-2s / 1099s
  • Proof of US status (passport or green card)
  • Proof of US domicile
  • W-2 employees: employment letter + recent pay stubs
  • Self-employed: 12 months of business bank statements + evidence of business
  • Retired: evidence of retirement income source (pension statements, SSA award letter)
